Lifestyle Family Photography at Trinity Tree Farm
Okay, I have to talk about tree farm minis for a sec because they might just be the coziest sessions I shoot all year. There's something about a tree farm in the winter - the rows of pines, the crisp air, that whole "we're about to pick out a Christmas tree" energy - that makes for some of my favorite family photos.
The rows of trees are basically a built-in backdrop. Seriously, I don't have to work hard to make these photos beautiful. Row after row of evergreens gives me endless options - long, dreamy shots down a row, cozy close-ups tucked between the branches, wide shots that show off the whole magical scene. It's one of those locations where I could point my camera in almost any direction and still get something gorgeous.
It feels like the start of the holidays. There's a reason "picking out the Christmas tree" is such a classic family tradition - it's just full of good energy. Excitement, anticipation, a little bit of chaos trying to agree on the "perfect" tree. When I photograph a family at a tree farm, I'm not just capturing portraits, I'm capturing that first spark of holiday magic before the season gets busy.
Kids get to be kids (and it shows). Running between the rows, hiding behind branches, "helping" pick out the tree, getting a little sappy sticky - tree farms give kids so much room to just be themselves. And when kids are having fun, that's when I get the real, unscripted moments that end up being everyone's favorite photos.
It's cozy in the best way. Flannel, beanies, mittens, that hot cocoa kind of energy - tree farm sessions just feel warm even though it's chilly outside. Bundled-up families snuggled together between the trees make for some of the coziest, most heartwarming images I get to capture all year.
There's a story built right into the photos. A tree farm session isn't just "stand here and smile." We can wander, explore, let everyone pick their favorite tree, maybe even let the kids climb on one of the smaller ones (don't worry, I always ask first). It ends up feeling less like a photoshoot and more like a fun little family outing that we happened to document along the way.
These photos make the best holiday cards. I might be biased, but there's nothing like a tree farm photo for a holiday card. It's festive without being cheesy, cozy without needing matching pajamas, and it always gets that "wait, where was this?!" reaction from friends and family.
