Lifestyle and documentary family photography are both approaches to capturing candid and natural moments of families.
While both styles aim to create authentic and meaningful images, there are some key differences between the two.
Lifestyle family photography
Focuses on capturing natural interactions and emotions between family members in a relaxed and comfortable setting. The photographer may suggest activities or prompts to encourage natural interactions, but the focus is on capturing the moments as they happen. The result is a series of beautiful, candid images that showcase the unique personality and love of the family.
documentary family photography
Takes a more hands-off approach. The photographer aims to capture the family's everyday life as it happens, without any interference or direction. This approach results in a series of images that tell a story of the family's life, highlighting the small moments that make up their day-to-day routines.
The main difference between the two styles is the level of involvement from the photographer. Lifestyle photography involves more direction and interaction between the photographer and family, while documentary photography is more observational.
Ultimately, both styles of family photography have their own unique strengths and can produce beautiful, meaningful images.
How i use lifestyle and documentary
My approach to making artful candid, real-life moments is to combine the best of these two methods. I have practiced both lifestyle and documentary for years and analyzed the pros and cons of each. I combine this with my years of design and art history education, resulting in my own magic formula!

one of my absolute favorite ways to capture those candid, fun-filled family moments is by planning an activity for your photo session.
It's like magic!
All of my sessions are centered around an activity that your family loves to do together. I've found that having something to focus on not only helps everyone feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera, but it also creates a beautiful storyline for your photos.
For my mini sessions, we'll do something seasonal and festive, like picking blueberries, playing at the beach, or finding the perfect Christmas tree. And for my longer sessions, we'll plan an activity together - whether that's hanging out at your home and doing your favorite things, or heading out to your favorite coffee shop or park. The possibilities are endless!
By incorporating an activity into your session, we'll create images that truly capture your family's unique personality and the joy you share together. So let's plan something amazing and get those cameras clicking!
