Seattle Family Photography location: Golden Gardens
Of all the locations I photograph families at throughout the year, Golden Gardens holds a special place in my heart. There's something about this stretch of Seattle shoreline that just works, session after session, family after family. If you've never considered it for your own photos, here's why I keep coming back.
The Light Off the Water Is Something Else
Golden Gardens faces west, which means it's practically made for sunset sessions. As the sun drops toward the Olympics across the Sound, the light turns soft, warm, and a little hazy in the best possible way. It bounces off the water and wraps around everyone in the frame. I've photographed a lot of sunsets over the years, and there's just something about the way the light behaves here — it's forgiving, flattering, and endlessly photogenic.
The Backdrop Does the Heavy Lifting
Between the sandy beach, the driftwood scattered along the shore, the mountains in the distance, and the boats drifting by, Golden Gardens gives me so much to work with. I can shoot wide and capture the whole sweeping scene, or get in close and let the driftwood and water blur into a soft, dreamy background. It's one of those rare locations that photographs beautifully no matter which direction I turn.
It Works for Every Kind of Family
I've photographed newborns bundled up on a blanket in the sand, toddlers chasing seagulls along the shoreline, big multi-generational families spread out on driftwood logs, and couples walking hand-in-hand as the sun goes down. Golden Gardens flexes to fit whoever's in front of my camera. It's relaxed enough for little kids to explore and sturdy enough (literally, driftwood everywhere) to give big groups a natural place to gather.
There's Room to Explore
Unlike a lot of popular photo spots that feel crowded into one small area, Golden Gardens gives us room to move. We can start on the sand, wander over to the driftwood, and finish along the grassy park area — all without ever feeling rushed or boxed in. That kind of space lets a session breathe, and it gives families the chance to actually enjoy their time there instead of just posing in one spot the whole time.
It Feels Like Seattle
There's something about photographing families with the Sound, the mountains, and the evening ferries in the background that feels distinctly, unmistakably Seattle. For local families, these photos become more than portraits — they become a snapshot of home. Years down the road, that backdrop will mean just as much as the faces in the frame.
A Location Worth Returning To
I could photograph families at Golden Gardens all year long and never get tired of it. Every session looks a little different depending on the season, the tide, and the sky that evening, but the magic of that golden, water-lit light never fails to deliver.
