Golden Gardens Park: the best family photography location

Let's talk about Golden Gardens for a sec, because if you've followed me for any amount of time, you already know this place has my whole heart.

Every fall (and honestly, all year round) I find myself pulling into that parking lot again and again, and I never get tired of it. There's just something about that stretch of Seattle shoreline that makes every single session feel a little magical.

The light is unreal. Golden Gardens faces west, so as the sun starts dropping toward the mountains, everything turns soft and warm and glowy. I've shot a lot of sunsets in my day, but there's something about the way the light bounces off the water here that just hits different. It's forgiving, it's warm, it makes everyone look like they're glowing from the inside out. I'm not exaggerating when I say I could photograph that light every single day and never get sick of it.

The backdrop basically does my job for me. Sandy beach, driftwood everywhere, mountains in the distance, boats drifting by - I mean, come on. I can go wide and capture the whole dreamy scene, or get up close and let all that driftwood and water blur into the prettiest background. It's one of those spots where I genuinely can't take a bad photo, and as a photographer, that's a very good feeling.

It works for literally everyone. I've had newborns bundled up on a blanket in the sand, toddlers chasing seagulls like it's their full-time job, big families spread across driftwood logs, couples walking hand in hand as the sun goes down - Golden Gardens just flexes to fit whoever shows up. Little kids have room to run and explore, and there's plenty of natural spots for big groups to gather without it feeling forced or awkward.

There's actual room to roam. Unlike some of the more "insta-famous" spots that feel packed into one tiny corner, Golden Gardens gives us space. We can start on the sand, wander to the driftwood, move over to the grass - and nobody feels rushed or crammed into one spot the whole time. Sessions here feel like an outing, not a photoshoot, and that's exactly the vibe I'm always going for.

And honestly? It just feels like home. There's something about photographing families with the Sound and the mountains and the ferries drifting by in the background that feels so distinctly Seattle. For a lot of my local families, this spot already holds memories - first walks with a new baby, family bike rides, sunset picnics. So when I photograph you there, I'm not just capturing your family, I'm capturing a place that already means something to you.

I could shoot at Golden Gardens all year long and never get tired of it. Every session looks a little different depending on the season and the sky that night, but that golden, glowy light? It never misses.
