Why I Love Photographing Families in the Fall

The Light Is Unmatched

There's a reason photographers talk about "golden hour" like it's sacred. But in fall, that golden light doesn't just show up for twenty minutes at sunset — it lingers. The sun sits lower in the sky for more of the day, casting this soft, warm glow that makes everyone look like they're lit from within. Skin tones glow, hair catches the light, and even an ordinary backyard session starts to feel cinematic.

Everyone Shows Up a Little More Relaxed

There's something about the energy of fall — the slower pace after a busy summer, the coziness of sweater weather — that makes families show up to sessions more relaxed. Kids aren't overheated and cranky from the sun. Parents aren't stressed about swimsuits or sunscreen. Everyone's just there, present, ready to enjoy an hour outside together. That relaxed energy translates directly into the photos. You can see it in the way people laugh a little easier and lean into each other a little more.

The Colors Do Half the Work for Me

Rust, amber, deep green, burgundy — fall's color palette is basically made for portraits. It's warm without being overwhelming, and it photographs beautifully against nearly every skin tone and outfit choice. I don't have to fight a location for good color; the trees, the fields, the light all hand it to me.

It Feels Like a Season Built for Togetherness

Fall traditions are family traditions — apple picking, pumpkin patches, walks through crunchy leaves, cozy sweaters and warm drinks. When I'm photographing a family in the fall, I'm not just documenting how they look. I'm capturing a season that's already wrapped in nostalgia and connection. Years from now, those photos won't just remind a family of what they looked like — they'll remind them of what that season of life felt like.

The Sessions Feel Like Little Adventures

Whether we're wandering through an orchard, walking along a shoreline at sunset, or exploring a park full of changing leaves, fall sessions rarely feel like "posed photos." They feel like an outing. A little adventure. Kids get to explore, parents get to relax, and I get to capture all of it as it naturally unfolds — which, to me, is always when the best photos happen.

A Season Worth Slowing Down For

At the end of the day, I think what I love most about photographing families in the fall is what the season represents: slowing down, gathering close, and soaking in the people you love before the busyness of the holidays sets in. It's a privilege to be trusted with those moments, and I never take it for granted.

If you've been thinking about booking a fall session, I'd love to help you capture this season with your family — golden light, cozy sweaters, and all.
