positive/negative space in photography

Here are some examples of the use of positive and negative space in photography

Think about what we discussed in the last worksheet. When you look at each photo, ask yourself the following questions.

  1. Identify the positive space and the negative space.

  2. How is the negative space helping you understand the story? — does it clean up the image or eliminate distractions?

  3. What is the focal point (or main character)? Is there more than one?

  4. Does the negative space help lead your eye to the focal point?

So much of understanding this is just stopping and asking yourself what YOU SEE.

Try not to focus too much on having the “right” answer, but just enjoy learning and exploring photography by studying the pictures asking yourself questions.

This is a very complex idea in art and design.

You are doing great!!
