Golden Gardens - a tourist guide
If you're planning a trip to Seattle (or you just moved here and are still exploring), I need to put Golden Gardens on your radar. It's one of my absolute favorite spots in the whole city, and honestly, if you only have time to check out one Seattle beach, this is the one I'd send you to.
Golden Gardens sits right up in Ballard, along Puget Sound, and it's got this rare thing most Seattle beaches don't - actual sand. A lot of our shoreline around here is rocky or pebbly, so when you find a wide, sandy stretch like this one, you notice. It's the kind of beach where you can actually kick your shoes off, dig your toes in, and just relax.
The views alone are worth the trip. On a clear day, you're looking straight across the Sound at the Olympic Mountains, watching sailboats and the occasional ferry drift by. Grab a spot on the sand in the evening and you're in for one of the best sunsets in the city - the sky turns all these warm orange and pink tones over the water, and it's just the kind of view that makes you stop scrolling your phone for a minute.
The park is actually split into two parts, and a lot of visitors don't realize the upper section even exists. Down by the water, you've got the beach, volleyball courts, fire pits, and a playground. Head up the hill and you'll find quieter forested trails, a pond, and a dog park - it feels like a totally different world up there, just minutes from the beach crowd below.
If you're around in the summer, the fire pits are a whole experience on their own. Locals gather there most evenings to watch the sunset, and if you bring your own firewood, you can grab one of the pits (first-come, first-served, so get there early on a nice day). It's one of those classic Seattle traditions - hanging out around a beach fire while the sun goes down over the water.
There's also a boat launch if you're into kayaking or paddleboarding, fishing piers if you want to try your luck, and plenty of picnic spots if you just want to post up with some food and enjoy the view. Keep an eye out for wildlife too - it's not unusual to spot a seal bobbing along in the water, ducks, and even turtles in the pond.
Why I love photographing families here
Golden Gardens is hands down one of my favorite places to shoot family photos. That golden hour light rolling in off the water is unreal, the sand and driftwood give me endless backdrop options, and there's enough space for kids to run, explore, and just be kids while I capture it all. Whether it's a family visiting Seattle for the first time or a local family wanting their yearly photos somewhere that actually feels like home, this spot never disappoints.
