A Note for Parents

This is a self-guided tour of photography through the vehicle of SHAPE.

If your kids are under the age of seven, they might need your help reading and understanding the content. I encourage you to allow them to express themselves in any way that they find useful during this exploration. There are no rules or wrong answers! There is not simply one way to make a photo or a painting. Just like there is no one way to interpret a piece of art.

With that in mind, please encourage your child to do these exercises with as much flare or sense of self as they see fit. They can answer the questions via this form, or choose to write them in a notebook. You can print it and get out all the art supplies. The little ones might enjoy making shapes with fishy crackers or cutting shapes out of construction paper. The bottom line is, have fun!!

A Note for THE KIDS

this is first and foremost about HAVING FUN!!

Photography and art can and should be explored by you in YOUR WAY. Have fun with this. Take time to think, feel and enjoy. Use markers, paint, or the computer — just don’t paint the computer!!

stuff you might need

Kids learn best in all different ways.

Also, we are in a pandemic. So.

With both of these things in mind, I have made a supply list that is adaptable to different learning styles and availability of what you have on hand, at home.

A printable pdf is available, by clicking here.

If you intend to have your child continue on this journey of learning photography, and if you happen to have a notebook on hand, I recommend starting a photography journal. They can have fun decorating it and a nice, personalized way of storing their answers and thoughts.

What are some of your favorite shapes?

Draw and label them in your notebook or on a piece of paper.

One of my favorite shapes is a triangle.

A triangle is fun in photos because it is exciting and dynamic for the eyes to see! It takes your eyes on an adventure through the picture, going from one corner to another.

Sometimes the shape is SUGGESTED.

You can connect the dots and imagine the shape in your mind.

Similar to this!

Connect the dots to make any shape you see.

Can you make different shapes from the same set of dots?

find the shapes

what shapes do you see?

You can write your answer in your photographer notebook OR just say the shapes out loud when you view the image.

Take your time exploring the photo with your eyes. You might see more shapes than you do at first glance.

And now, for the fun part!!

You get to stretch your legs and apply everything you’ve learned and observed so far!
